Description
Abstract
Alternative fuel retail fueling sites in the state of Indiana. Alternative fuels are described as
biodiesel (B2, B5, B10, and B20) as well as ethanol (E85).
Purpose
The availability of alternative fuels is becoming more widespread because of increasing demand that
is driven by consumption, marketing and politics. Alternative fuels are renewable or good for the environment
because they are renewable and potentially have lower emissions. They are politically described as increasing
local jobs and the economy and lowering demand on foreign oil. Consumption of these fuels increases as more
vehicles capable of burning mixtures increases. This data set locates alternative fuel retail fuel sites.
Supplementary Information
Retail fueling sites listed on the National Ethanol Vehicle Coalition (NEVC) and
National Biodiesel Board (NBB) Web sites for Indiana were located by address information and adjusted using
orthophotography.

Process step 1
Process description: A Web search for alternative retail fuel sites in Indiana led to the National Ethanol Vehicle Coalition
and National Biodiesel Board Internet sites. The location information was printed from the NEVC and NBB Web sites on
August 16, 2006. This information was typed into a Microsoft Excel spreadsheet and manually checked for accuracy. The fuel
type was entered as yes, for available, or no, for not available, and crosschecked with the original printouts.
GoogleEarth http://earth.google.com/ was used to locate the retail fueling site by address. The latitude and longitude
were documented on the Microsoft Excel spreadsheet by manual documentation. Using the calculate function in Excel the
decimal degree locations were computed. The spreadsheet was imported into ESRI ArcMap and the decimal degree locations
were automatically plotted. The 2005 Indiana orthophotgraphy (1 foot or 6 inch where available) were loaded into the ArcMap
project and the facility point moved to make sure it was located on the facility property, in many cases the point was
placed on the driveway into the facility. The Universal Transfer Mercator zone 16 coordinates were added to the data table
using ESRI ArcMap.
