This data set was provided to personnel of Bernardin, Lochmueller and Associates, Inc. (BLA) by Stan Schmitt. The data was originally provided in hard copy format and then digitized into an ESRI shapefile format, and was named CANALS_HISTORIC_ROUTES_SW. As part of the development of the State Wide GIS of Indiana, this file was expanded to include additional areas that were not part of the SW Indiana GIS and renamed Canal_Historic_Routes_IN.

Description:
Abstract:
Data depicts the locations of three historic canals in Indiana, the Wabash-Erie Canal, White Water Canal and the Central Canal. These canals were constructed and used for transportation between 1830-1870. Canal historians have searched county courthouse records and archived state engineering reports to plot canal routes on USGS 7.5 minute quadrangles. Some portions of the canal routes are unknown and approximated as indicated in the table. In many locations canals have been filled in and covered by development. is collected only from southern Indiana border through Vigo and Marion counties.
Purpose:
This data was collected by Bernardin-Lochmueller and Associates, IN; to depict the locations of canals in Indiana. Canal locations indicate the possibility historic structures.

All finished, connected canal routes within the study area of Indiana are mapped. Many sections were destroyed and covered by development. South of the Central Canal, there are six disjunct canal sections that were planned to be connected. These sections are not mapped.

A shapefile named "CANALS" was obtained by the Indiana Geological Survey (IGS) from Bernardin, Lochmueller, & Assoc. Inc. Personnel of IGS clipped the shapefile to a coverage named "SWCLP83," which contains the area within the boundaries of the southwestern 26 counties in the state of Indiana, compiled at a scale of 1:24,000. The Geoprocessing Wizard in ArcView was used to perform the clipping operation. The clipped shapefile was renamed "CANALS_HISTORIC_ROUTES_SW."
