Description:
Abstract:
COAL_MINE_SEAMS_SPRINGFIELD_IN is a polygon-based ESRI ArcView shapefile that shows the locations and extents of Springfield coal mines in the coal region of Indiana. COAL_MINE_SEAMS_SPRINGFIELD_IN includes mine locations and coal seam information from documented surface and underground mines that operated in Indiana since the mid-1800s.

Purpose:
COAL_SEAMS, the predecessor of COAL_MINE_SEAMS_SPRINGFIELD_IN, was compiled by the Indiana Geological Survey (IGS) as part of a contract deliverable for the Abandoned Mine Lands program of the Indiana Department of Natural Resources, Division of Reclamation. COAL_SEAMS incorporates mine locations compiled as part of the Indiana Coal Mine Information System (CMIS), an integrated geographic information system (GIS), and database management system (DBMS) created to store, analyze, and distribute coal mine data in Indiana. The system contains data for surface and underground coal mines that operated in Indiana from the mid-1830s to 2000. Original source information for COAL_SEAMS includes company mine maps, field maps and notes of IGS geologists, IGS publications, Indiana State Mine Inspector Reports, several series of aerial photographs, and U.S. Geological Survey 7.5-minute quadrangle maps. All mine data included in COAL_SEAMS are organized in a GIS using ArcInfo and ESRI ArcView software of the Environmental Systems Research Institute (ESRI) on the Windows NT and Windows 2000 platforms. Scale of source data ranges from 1:4,800 to 1:100,000. COAL_SEAMS includes attributes which allow the mine polygons to be differentiated based on coal seam mined.

Attribute_Accuracy:
Attribute_Accuracy_Report:
Two tests for attribute consistency were performed by IGS personnel using the QueryBuilder Tool in ESRI Arcview. (1) Completeness of values was verified. No values were left blank. (2) Validity of values was verified. All features were attributed with values in the appropriate range and format.
Logical_Consistency_Report: ESRI ArcInfo polygon topology is present.

Completeness_Report:
All coal mines included in this shapefile were compiled as part of the Indiana Coal Mine Information System (CMIS) project at the Indiana Geological Survey. The CMIS is an integrated geographic information system (GIS) and database management system (DBMS) created to maintain spatial and tabular data related to coal mines in the Indiana portion of the Illinois Basin. The CMIS includes spatial mine data compiled from all known sources including: company mine maps (from the Indiana Division of Reclamation; coal companies), field maps and notes of IGS geologists, IGS publications, several series of aerial photographs, and U.S. Geological Survey 7.5-minute quadrangle maps. In compiling data for the CMIS, every effort was made to ensure data accuracy and completeness. However, it is known that undocumented mining has occurred in the study area. Also, because of inconsistency in source map quality and completeness, the actual extent of mining may not coincide with the boundaries portrayed in this shapefile. A detailed on-the-ground survey and historical analysis of a specific site may differ from this shapefile.
Positional_Accuracy:
Horizontal_Positional_Accuracy:
Horizontal_Positional_Accuracy_Report:
Mine outlines included in this shapefile were compiled from several sources having varying map scales. Thus, the horizontal positional accuracy of individual polygons may vary. If highly detailed mine location and layout information is needed, contact the Indiana Geological Survey for additional information. Because of inconsistency in source map quality and completeness, the actual extent of mining may not coincide with the boundaries portrayed in this shapefile. This is particularly true for surface mines that removed more than one coal seam. In such cases, the extent of coal removal for each individual seam is often not known. In such instances, the entire mine extent is assigned attributes for all coal seams that were mined at a particular mine (or pit). Thus, in instances where a coal seam is not mined continuously throughout a mine, the extent of coal removal of that coal seam may be overestimated.
Vertical_Positional_Accuracy:
Vertical_Positional_Accuracy_Report:
The vertical positional accuracy was not a factor in the creation of COAL_MINE_SEAMS_SURVANT_IN. No quantitative tests were performed.

Process_Description:
Mine outlines from a variety of sources including company mine maps, field maps and notes of IGS geologists, IGS publications, Reports of the State Mine Inspector, several series of aerial photographs, and U.S. Geological Survey 7.5-minute quadrangle maps were re-scaled and hand-plotted on 1:24,000 scale topographic maps. This data set, comprising nearly 200 quadrangle maps (both surface and underground mine map sets), was compiled by IGS personnel in the mid-1980s to create the first complete compilation of mine locations in Indiana.

Polygons from the Indiana Geological Survey 1:24,000-scale mine maps were digitized by Indiana Geological Survey (IGS) personnel in the late 1980s to create the first coal mine GIS for the IGS and the Indiana Division of Reclamation. Outlines were digitized using ESRI's PC ArcInfo and geo-referenced using 8 tics from 1:24,000 quadrangle maps.

Process_Description:
Data from the early coal mine GIS were converted to a new GIS format and updated with new mine data. Using ESRI ArcInfo 7.2.1, polygons were extracted from the old GIS coverages and integrated into a new REGION-based GIS format. Each polygon was attributed with source information, dates of mining, and coal seam data. The resulting reformatted mine coverages (over 4,000 including underground and surface coal mines) constitute the primary mine GIS data for the Indiana Coal Mine Information System (CMIS), an integrated geographic information system and database management system. In addition to the reformatting, over 1,000 mine coverages were added to the GIS, including approximately 225 new surface mines, 20 new underground mines, and nearly 1,200 historic underground mine entrance locations.

CMIS mine data were updated with information collected for the Directory of Coal Mines and Producers in Indiana - 2000. The update included approximately 40 surface mine polygons and 5 underground mine polygons. Most data were received in digital format from mining companies and converted to suitable format by IGS personnel.

Process_Description:
Mine coverages from the Indiana Coal Mine Information System were appended using an AML running in ESRI ArcInfo 7.2.1. The resulting coverage included all mines in the Indiana coal region. COAL_SEAMS was created in ESRI ArcView by using the Convert- to-shapefile command to create a new shapefile from the selected data. The shapefile was then modified using an Avenue script that reorders the polygons in stratigraphically correct order. This ensures that when the shapefile is viewed in ESRI ArcView, the polygons are displayed in stratigraphic order, with the youngest coal polygons on top and the oldest coal polygons on the bottom.

Process_Description:
The original shapefile, COAL_SEAMS, was reprojected from NAD27 to NAD83 in ESRI ArcView using the extension named "Projector." The resulting shapefile was named SEAMS_83. SEAMS_83 was converted to an ESRI ArcInfo coverage using the following parameters from the Arc prompt: Arc% shapearc seams_83 seams type. The resulting coverage, SEAMS, was imported into ESRI ArcView based on the 'Type' feature class. The 'Type' feature class was then queried using ESRI ArcView's Query Builder tool. The following query was made on the field named "seam_code:" ( [Seam_code] = "DAN" ). The selected features were then converted to a shapefile named COAL_MINE_SEAMS_SPRINGFIELD_IN.
