This procedure was completed by scanning pages from the book and then geo-referencing the images using the freeware extension Image Warp in ESRI ArcView Version 3.2a and ESRI extension Spatial Analyst.

FLOODPLAIN_GENERAL_IN is a polygon shapefile showing the GENERAL Locations of floodplains in Indiana and whether they are urban or rural. This data was digitized from a printed book graphic and is only general. No storm events are recorded. FEMA floodplain maps or digital Q3 files when available must be used to obtain more detailed floodplain positions and storm events.

An ESRI ArcView extension for quality control and root mean square error testing found no overlapping or sliver polygons. Source maps were available in a series of regions which were not edge matched, therefore, some floodplains may be truncated to county boundaries.

NO ERROR TESTING was preformed; however, data was compared to digital Q3 floodplain data from FEMA available for Posey, Vanderburgh, and Warrick counties. This data is much more generalized and there are large discrepancies between FEMA floodplains and those in this file. Even width of floodplains may vary widely. Originators of this data recommend replacing this data with FEMA Q3 digital files when that data is available throughout the study area. Contact FEMA for a list of what Indiana counties are now available.

Book split Indiana into regions, then discussed and presented maps on the water resource in each region. The regional floodplain maps published in the book were used as the data source for digitizing floodplains into GIS. These regional maps had not been edge matched.

Process_Description:
The eight regional maps were scanned in color on a table scanner in .jpeg format. The ESRI freeware extension "Image Warp" was used to georegister the images to county boundaries in State Plane, Indiana West Zone, NAD27, feet. Floodplains were then digitized by hand from the registered images at a scale of 1:200000. Floodplains often include the surface area of water in streams, rivers, and water bodies. After digitizing each region, adjoining floodplains were unioned using the ESRI ArcView Geoprocessing extention and all attributes were verified with the source. Because of differences in scanning and registration, each regions source image had different pixel resolution and registration accuracy. The final file was reprojected to UTM16 NAD83.
