Abstract:

KARST_SPRINGS_MM65_IN is a point shapefile that shows the locations of springs in and around the karst region of south-central Indiana.

Purpose:

KARST_SPRINGS_MM65_IN was derived from a coverage named SPG. The purpose of SPG was to compile a map layer showing springs in southern Indiana, in and around the karst area, using unpublished work maps of Richard L. Powell, a former employee of the Indiana Geological Survey (IGS), and unpublished data from a spreadsheet provided by Samuel S. Frushour (IGS), and to bring that map layer to publication by the IGS.

Unpublished work maps showed plotted locations of springs. The spreadsheet provided locations of springs in the Congressional Land Survey System (Township-Range-Section) format.

Process_Description:

After paper maps were received from Richard L. Powell (formerly of the Indiana Geological Survey), personnel of the IGS scanned, digitized, and georeferenced a coverage. After a spreadsheet was received from Sam Frushour (IGS), coordinate information was converted from Congressional Land Survey System to UTM Zone 16, NAD 27 by Charles W. Zuppann (IGS), using Geographix software, and a point coverage was created. The points from the two sources were plotted on paper and reviewed by Powell and Frushour for accuracy. Some points were moved or eliminated because of duplications or mislocations, and a final combined coverage, named SPG, was produced.

The original coverage, SPG, was reprojected using UTM Zone 16, NAD83. This coverage was then clipped to another coverage named INCLP83, a boundary coverage for the State of Indiana (compiled at a scale of 1:24,000). The resulting shapefile was named KARST_SPRINGS_MM65_IN.
