Description:

Abstract:: STRUCTURAL_FEATURES_IN is a line shapefile that shows the location of known structural features in Indiana; source data scales range from 1:12,000 to 1:500,000 (only one fault trace) with the majority being taken from sources with a scale of 1:63,360 or larger.
Purpose:: STRUCTURAL_FEATURES_IN represents a subset of the statewide digital shapefile found in INDSTRUC. INDSTRUC was created to provide a statewide source showing the most accurate information available on locations of structural features in Indiana.
Supplemental_Information:: Original paper source maps were gathered by Nancy Hasenmueller. The fault traces in the southern portions of Spencer and Perry Counties, Indiana, were modified slightly from IGS Petroleum Exploration Map 39C and 40C to align with the fault traces shown on U.S. Geological Survey 7.5-minute geologic quadrangle maps in Kentucky. For additional information, see the source information under Data Quality Information.
Structural features were digitized from these source maps using AutoDesk AutoCAD Rel. 13 software and the line coverage created using ESRI ArcCAD 11.4.1 software. This coverage was imported into ESRI ArcView 3.2 software and converted into a shapefile. This shapefile was modified by adding a field for the name of the structural feature.

Process_Description:

Except for the Sharpsville Fault data, paper media for each source map were placed on a digitizing board and calibrated to UTM coordinates in AutoDesk AutoCAD software. Structural features were digitized into one file. After all traces were completed, a line coverage was created using ESRI ArcCAD software. This coverage was imported into ESRI ArcView 3.2, converted into a shapefile, and attributed with feature names in a new field. The fault trace of the Sharpsville Fault was created by the geologist using Surfer software and exported in DXF format. This DXF file was imported into ESRI ArcView and converted to a shapefile. The line trace of the Fortville Fault, which was also in the DXF file, was deleted and the shapefile resaved. Both datasets of structural features were then joined in ESRI ArcView using the GeoProcessing Wizard. The variable "Name" was added to the shapefile to add the fault name.

The original coverage, STRUCT, was first reprojected using NAD83. This coverage was then clipped to another coverage, INCLP83, containing the area within the 92 county boundaries for the state of Indiana, which was compiled at a scale of 1:24,000. Since STRUCT and INCLP83 boundaries did not coincide perfectly with one another, some lines along the state boundary were either slightly truncated or slightly extended to the new boundary. In every case, the modifications were minor. The resulting coverage was converted to a shapefile named "STRUCTURAL_FEATURES_IN."
