Abstract:
This ESRI ArcGIS point shapefile shows locations where water samples associated with coal beds have been obtained for chemical analysis. The data were compiled from a variety of publications of the Indiana Geological Survey and the Indiana Department of Natural Resources, Division of Water. Data were also compiled from unpublished reports of the Indiana Geological Survey and unpublished theses of Indiana University Department of Geology.

The water samples were obtained from monitoring wells installed in flooded voids of abandoned underground coal mines, in pillars of abandoned underground mines, and in unmined coal beds. Also, some samples were obtained from coal faces and roof rocks within the active Buck Creek Mine. Other samples were obtained from water wells whose uncased intervals penetrated coal beds. Analyses include pH, acidity, alkalinity, fluoride, chloride, sulfate, calcium, magnesium, sodium, iron, manganese, aluminum, specific conductance, and total dissolved solids.

Purpose:
The purpose of this ESRI ArcGIS point shapefile is to provide a visual representation and a summary of data included in a variety of published and unpublished reports regarding the chemistry of water samples associated with coal beds of Indiana.

Chemistry data were obtained from preexisting digital databases or transcribed from tables or appendices associated with a variety of paper publications and unpublished reports. The chemical analyses that are reported in the contributory publications and unpublished reports may have been performed by using a variety of field and laboratory methods, and, therefore, may not be strictly comparable. In particular, minimum detection limits may differ from one report to another.

The identity of coal beds associated with various water samples were obtained from drillers' logs or were interpreted by comparison of drilling information (such as depths and elevations of uncased intervals of monitoring wells) with generalized stratigraphic columns. Particularly in the latter case, the identification of coal beds may be subject to error.

Locations were obtained from preexisting digital databases or were plotted using maps, aerial photographs, or tabular information that was provided in a variety of paper publications and unpublished reports. While the locations of some of the points may have been obtained using GPS instruments, much of the locational information was originally specified in terms of the Congressional Survey System (also known as the "Public Land Survey System") as "quarter-quarter" or "quarter-quarter-quarter" sections. Consequently, horizontal accuracy may vary significantly from one point to another.

Using ESRI ArcCatalog, a point shapefile was created named "WATER_CHEMISTRY_COAL_BEDS_IGS_IN.SHP." Using the "Edit" function in ESRI ArcMap, points were plotted using location data obtained from various spreadsheets, publications, and unpublished maps and reports. Attribute fields were added providing well-identification numbers, water-sample descriptions, location information in terms of the Congressional Survey System, surface elevations of sample locations (in feet), depths of the cased intervals of wells (in feet), total depths of wells (in feet), number of samples derived from a given point, dates when samples were acquired, and chemistry data, including values of pH, average values of specific conductance, and average values (in milligrams per liter) of acidity, alkalinity, fluoride, chloride, sulfate, calcium, magnesium, sodium, iron, manganese, aluminum, and total dissolved solids. Data obtained from the various spreadsheets, publications, and unpublished reports were then added to the appropriate attribute fields.
