The mapped units include glacial till that is interpreted to have been deposited during the Wisconsin Glaciation. The last major expansion of the North American Laurentide Ice Sheet occured in the Wisconsin glacial episode. Purpose: WISCONSIN_GLACIAL_LIMIT_IN.shp was derived from a polygon shapefile named "SURFICIAL_GEOL_MM49_IN.shp," which, in turn, was derived from Gray, H. H., 1989, Quaternary geologic map of Indiana, Indiana Geological Survey Miscellaneous Map 49. WISCONSIN_GLACIAL_LIMIT_IN.shp was created to provide a digital format of the Wisconsin glacial limit in the state of Indiana, suitable for use in a GIS. A. Malott, W. D. Thornbury, W. J. Wayne, A. F. Schneider, A. M. Gooding, and G. H. Johnson. These were supplemented by field investigations, soils maps, and drilling data. Tests for attribute consistency were performed by CGDA personnel: (a) Completeness of values were verified. Attribute values in the shapefile were confirmed to be present in the original digital source polygon shapefile. No values were left blank, unless appropriate. (b) Validity of values was verified. All values were checked for spelling and capitalization. Logical_Consistency_Report: Exact duplication of line segments of the polygons representing the southern extent of Wisconsinan glacial sediment deposition as represented in SURFICIAL_GEOL_MM49_IN: Quaternary Geologic Map of Indiana (Indiana Geological Survey, 1:500,000, Polygon Shapefile) was checked and verified. Rigorous edgematching or snapping was not conducted on the digitized "gap fill" line segments representing the inferred location of the glacial limit; however, the line segments were digitized at a zoom scale of 1:10,000, so the lines should be sufficiently smooth and continuous for use at the recommended scale (1:500,000). Completeness_Report: The digital shapefile was derived with modifications from a preexisting published digital polygon shapefile (Gray, 1989) and is assumed to embody the same definitions and generalizations as were used in the creation of the published map. Lines digitized between mapped glacial units to create a continuous boundary included added spatial generalities to the data set in those areas. These line segments were assigned attributes in the fields "SYMBOL" and "LIMIT" so they can be easily identified. Positional_Accuracy: Horizontal_Positional_Accuracy: Horizontal_Positional_Accuracy_Report: No records exist regarding horizontal positional accuracy of this shapefile. Where glacial deposits are mapped at the ground surface, the positional accuracy of the original mapping is estimated by the author to be in the range of 20 meters. However, the coordinates used in this layer were derived from surface geology polygons published at 1:500,000-scale, which equates to a horizontal accuracy of 254 meters. No quantitative tests were performed. The following is excerpted from H. H. Gray (in preparation) regarding the glacial limit represented in this data layer, "The [Wisconsin] boundary is easier to comprehend and locate with some precision.North of that line, designated the Wisconsin glacial boundary, deposits of till, a complex of materials directly deposited by ice, are widespread. Typically nonstratified and nonsorted, not having been much worked over by the vast volumes of meltwater that emanated from the glaciers, tills of Wisconsin age yield soils that clearly indicate their relatively recent origin. These soils are so distinct from the soils formed on older materials that in many places the vanished margin of the ice can be determined within a very few meters laterally. This boundary is broken by stream valleys as wide as a few kilometers, but other than these it may be drawn confidently across the entire state. " Vertical_Positional_Accuracy: Vertical_Positional_Accuracy_Report: The vertical positional accuracy of the published paper source map is unknown. Other than using the same vertical datum as the source data, vertical positional accuracy was not a factor in the digital production of this data set. No quantitative tests were performed. Vertical accuracy of the published paper source map is unknown. Process_Step: Process_Description: Attributes of the original polygon shapefile, SURFICIAL_GEOL_MM49_IN.shp, were queried to identify mapped units associated with glacial till interpreted to have been deposited during the Pleistocene Wisconsin glaciation in Indiana. The features were exported to a temporary polygon shapefile. Polygons meeting the criteria that were not at the southern extent were deleted. The remaining polygons in that shapefile were converted to line features and the original attributes were retained. Using ESRI ArcMap Editor, the features in the working line shapefile were edited to retain only the southernmost boundaries of the mapped glacial units. The glacial units are not continuous at the glacial limit because of erosion in stream valleys. In these locations, the mapped limit line fragments were connected at their southernmost extents across valleys by newly digitized (and generalized) shortest-path line features to create a continuous boundary. The mapped glacial till units were assigned the attribute "Wisconsinan glacial deposits," whereas the "gap fill" line segments were assigned an attribute "Limit inferred" in new "LIMIT" field; in the retained "SYMBOL" field, a new attribute "gap" was entered for the inferred line segments. One other field (i.e., "GEOLOGIC_A") and attributes were retained from the original polygon shapefile and renamed "GEOL_AGE".
